Just yesterday The New York Comic Con announced a revised cosplay weapons policy. The major items of note were requiring that all weapons be made of cardboard or foam.
It took less than a day for NYCC to revise that revision. In an update on their FAQ, they have now added the following:
At the discretion of Security onsite, the following may be allowed:
- Plastic and Metal Shields
- Lightweight Plastic/PVC Props/Light Sabers
- Toy guns as long as they do not look like real ones, cannot function or shoot projectiles and have an orange tip on the barrel
What is most interesting here is the last point, which is certainly open to interpretation. We have previously reported on DS Arms, a company that manufactures and sells both real working firearms as well as replicas. After having purchased a booth at last month’s Wizard World Chicago, DS Arms was not allowed to set up their items at the show.
Recently, on their Facebook page DS Arms posted a group of photos of weapons that they bring to cons. As they specify in the post:
“Some people have inquired of what were are bringing to the Con shows, here are some examples. Keep in mind we are doing 80% lower replicas or 100% live depending on what a customer requests and what’s legal where they live. Several of our employees are into different genera’s of the comic Realm so we have had requests to do special one of a kind themes on a custom shop basis.”
So if a con goer were to bring something like the Batman-themed gun DS Arms posted, would the NYCC security see it as a toy gun? What about the white gun?
